      The Lincoln Funeral Procession, Washington, D.C.

      The War of the Rebellion: A Compilation of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies (v. 46, pt. 3):


      [Handbill] [1865 April 19] Order of the Funeral Procession [of] President Abraham Lincoln (Lehigh University)

      • The 22nd United States Colored Infantry is presumably one of the "Two regiments of Infantry" listed on the sixth line.
      • Also note at the bottom of the handbill that "The troops designated to form the escort will assemble...and form line precisely at 11 o'clock A. M...."


      Supplement to the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies (pt. 2, v. 77). "Record of Events for Twenty-second United States Colored Infantry, December 1863-June 1865" (p. 556-581):

      • Field and Staff:
        "April 17-19.--The regiment was ordered to Washington to participated [sic] in the funeral exercises of the President of the United States. Arrived on April 19, in time to take its place at the head of the procession." (p. 558)
      • Regiment:
        "April 17. -- Received orders at 5 p.m. to proceed to Washington to participate in the funeral solemnities of President [Abraham] Lincoln. Started at 6 [p.m.] in light marching order. Reached City Point a little after midnight, distance eighteen miles."
        "April 18. -- Went on board transport at 2 a.m. Started at 4 a.m. The boat lay by that night in the Potomac [River]."
        "April 19. -- Reached Washington at 12 m. Reported; marched to Pennsylvania Avenue and between Sixth and Seventh [Streets] met the procession. Halted; wheeled into column, left in front, and became the head of the procession. After the funeral the men were quartered at Soldiers' Rest, the officers at hotels." (p. 560)
      • Company B:
        "April 17. -- Received orders to report to Washington to participate in the funeral ceremonies of our late lamented President. Were quartered in Soldiers' Rest." (p. 563)
      • Company C:
        "April 17. -- Received orders to proceed to Washington, District of Columbia to take part in the funeral ceremonies of President Lincoln." (p. 565)
      • Company D: "April 17-19. -- Left Poplar Grove Church and arrived at Washington April 19." (p. 567)
      • Company E:
        "April 17. -- It was ordered to Washington to participate in the funeral obsequies of President Lincoln." (p. 569)
      • Company F:
        "April 19. -- Left Petersburg for Washington to attend the funeral of President Lincoln." (p. 571)
      • Company G:
        "April 19. -- Arrived in Washington, District of Columbia, just in time to have the honor to form part of the funeral procession escorting the remains of our beloved late Chief Magistrate and Commander in Chief, Abraham Lincoln, from the White House to the Capitol." (p. 573)
      • Company H:
        "April 17. -- In the evening it started for City Point. There embarked for Washington to attend the funeral of the President." (p. 576)
      • Company I:
        "April 17-28. -- The company, together with the regiment, was ordered to Washington and participated in the funeral services of the late President Lincoln, after which it was sent into Charles County, Maryland to assist in the search for J. Wilkes Booth, which search occupied until April 28." (p. 578)
